01 — ABOUT

Run. Jump.
Survive.

Ninja Runner is a platformer game developed between
September and October 2021.

The player controls a ninja character who must navigate
platforms, avoid obstacles, collect items, and progress
through the game environment.

The project focused on creating the fundamental systems
behind a platform game, including player movement,
jumping, collision detection, level design, scoring,
and game progression.

02 — GAMEPLAY

Built around
movement.

01

Player Movement

Responsive movement allows the ninja to run,
jump, and navigate the environment.

02

Platforming

Platforms create different paths through the level
and require careful timing from the player.

03

Obstacles

Environmental obstacles challenge the player and
make movement more strategic.

03 — GAME LOOP

Every action
changes the game.

01

Player Input

Keyboard or controller input determines the
character’s movement.

02

Movement

The game updates the ninja’s position based
on the player’s input.

03

Collision Detection

The game checks interactions between the
player, platforms, obstacles, and environment.

04

Game State

Score, player position, health, and progression
are updated based on gameplay events.

05 — MY CONTRIBUTION

Building the
ninja’s world.

I worked on the development of the game’s core
functionality, focusing on the systems that allow
the player to move through and interact with the
platforming environment.

  • Implemented player movement
  • Developed jumping mechanics
  • Worked with collision detection
  • Implemented gameplay interactions
  • Designed and tested platform layouts
  • Debugged gameplay behaviour

07 — CHALLENGES

Making movement
feel right.

One of the key challenges in building a platformer was
creating movement that felt predictable and responsive.

Player movement, jumping, gravity, and collision detection
all need to work together. A small issue in one system can
affect the entire gameplay experience.

Testing different situations helped identify edge cases
such as landing on platforms, moving near obstacles, and
interacting with different parts of the level.

08 — WHAT I LEARNED

From code
to gameplay.

Systems Thinking

I learned how multiple programming systems need to
work together to create a complete interactive
experience.

Debugging

Testing gameplay helped me understand how to isolate
problems and identify the source of unexpected
behaviour.

Interaction Design

I learned that technical functionality is only part
of game development; controls and feedback also need
to feel intuitive to the player.

Level Design

Designing platforms and obstacles showed me how
environment layout can influence player behaviour.

09 — TAKEAWAY

Building Ninja Runner taught me how
programming systems become an interactive experience.
