Three of a Kind
Card Matching Game

A card-matching game designed around memory, pattern recognition,
and strategic decision-making. The project combines interactive
gameplay with programming logic to create a simple but engaging
player experience.

01 — ABOUT

Simple rules.
Strategic gameplay.

Three of a Kind is a card-matching game built around the
idea of finding groups of matching cards.

Players reveal cards, remember their positions, and attempt
to create matching sets while managing their number of moves.
The project focuses on implementing the core mechanics of a
game while keeping the experience simple and intuitive.

The project provided an opportunity to explore game-state
management, user interaction, conditional logic, and
designing a responsive gameplay loop.

02 — GAME MECHANICS

Everything starts
with a match.

01

Reveal

Players select cards to reveal their hidden values
and begin building a potential match.

02

Remember

Previously revealed cards give players information
they can use to make better decisions.

03

Match

Finding three matching cards completes a set and
increases the player’s progress.

03 — GAME LOOP

From click
to completion.

01

Player selects a card

The selected card changes state and reveals
its value.

02

Game checks the selection

The program compares the current selection
against previously revealed cards.

03

Match is evaluated

Matching cards are recorded while unsuccessful
combinations are reset.

04

Game state updates

Score, moves, and completed matches are updated
after each interaction.

05

Completion

The game ends when all required matching sets
have been discovered.

04 — MY CONTRIBUTION

Building the
experience.

My role focused on implementing the core game
functionality and making sure the different
components worked together as one consistent
gameplay experience.

  • Implemented card selection logic
  • Developed matching logic
  • Managed game state
  • Implemented score and move tracking
  • Tested different gameplay scenarios
  • Debugged gameplay issues

05 — TECHNOLOGY

(cardOne.value === cardTwo.value
&& cardTwo.value === cardThree.value) {

}

}

06 — CHALLENGES

More than
matching cards.

One of the main challenges was keeping track of the changing
state of the game as players interacted with different cards.

The program needed to know which cards had been selected,
which cards were already matched, when selections should
be reset, and when the player had completed the game.

This required careful handling of program state and testing
different sequences of player interactions to ensure that
the game behaved consistently.

07 — WHAT I LEARNED

Thinking in
game states.

This project helped me understand how even a relatively
simple game can involve several interacting states and
conditions.

I gained experience breaking a larger problem into smaller
pieces of logic and thinking about how every player action
should change the state of the application.

It also strengthened my debugging and problem-solving skills,
particularly when unexpected combinations of user actions
produced unexpected results.

08 — TAKEAWAY

A simple card game became an exercise in
logic, state management, and interactive design.
